Eligibility – Internships
- Be a full-time student or within 12 months of graduation from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S.
- Have a proficient level of English.
- Accept a placement that supports your chosen career field based on your education or degree.
Eligibility – Trainee Program
- Have a degree from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S. plus one year of experience in your chosen career field OR have five years of related work experience.
- Have a proficient level of English.

Eligibility – Teach Program
- Be working as a teacher outside of the U.S. with at least two years of full-time teaching experience OR
- If not currently teaching, within 12 months of applying for the program, must have or will have received an advanced degree (beyond a U.S. bachelor’s) in education or in the subject matter you intend to teach.
- Be fluent in the English language.
- Meet the qualification for teaching at the primary or secondary levels in schools in your home country.
- Be of good reputation and character.

The application process allows us to assess program eligibility and ensure that all Department of State regulations are followed. J-1 candidates will submit documents to prove their eligibility. DS-2019 Issuance and Visa Appointment
Take your Alliance Abroad-issued DS-2019 form and your Training/Internship Placement Plan to the U.S. Embassy at your scheduled time for your J-1 visa appointment. It’s an important step, and we’re here to help if you need it!

FAQ's
What is a self-arranged placement in the J-1 program?
A self-arranged placement is when a qualified candidate finds their own internship or trainee program, without the assistance of a placement agency. As long as the host company and the position meet the J-1 visa requirements, and a sponsor organization like AAG agrees to support your application, you can apply.
While they’re not required, it can definitely strengthen your profile!
What types of positions qualify for a J-1 self-arranged placement?
Positions must provide structured, guided training in a professional field (e.g., business, marketing, engineering, hospitality, etc.) and must not be primarily clerical or unskilled labor.
Do I need a J-1 sponsor even if I found my own placement?
Yes, all J-1 applicants need a Department of State designated sponsor such as Alliance Abroad Group to issue the DS-2019 certificate of eligibility form and oversee the program.
Can I do my J-1 internship at a small business or startup?
Yes, as long as the company can provide meaningful training, has proper supervision, and complies with program rules.
How do I start and find a self-arranged internship?
Start searching for roles in the U.S. based on your qualifications (post-secondary education and/or work experience). Use job and internship platforms such as LinkedIn, Handshake, Indeed, etc. or search directly on company websites. Tailor your resume and create a cover letter based on the company/internship you have found and reach out directly to the business. Once you get an offer letter, reach out to Alliance Abroad Group to guide you and the host company on the next steps.
How long does the application and visa process take?
The entire process typically takes 2 to 3 months. As part of our application process, candidates need to submit eligibility documents which can take time to gather. Host companies will also need to submit eligibility documents as well as a comprehensive training plan. Once we receive an application, we will review it within 7 business days. AAG has expedited application review options (1 or 3 business days) for an additional fee. If there is any follow-up required, AAG will reach out during this time. Once an application is approved, AAG issues the DS-2019, which is the certificate of eligibility that an applicant can bring with them to the U.S. consulate nearest to them for their visa interview. What is required of the host company?
The host company must provide relevant training and supervision during the internship or trainee program. They will need to fill out AAG required documents (Host Company Application and Agreement), provide unexpired Workers Compensation policy, and complete the DS-7002 training plan.
As part of our onboarding process, AAG will conduct a call with the host company to familiarize them with our company and our role as a sponsor and to ensure that they understand the rules and regulations of the program.
In compliance with Department of State regulations, if the host company has less than $3 Million in annual revenue OR has less than 25 full-time employees, AAG will conduct a site visit of the property.
