Eligibility – Internships
- Be a full-time student or within 12 months of graduation from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S.
- Have a proficient level of English.
- Accept a placement that supports your chosen career field based on your education or degree.
Eligibility – Trainee Program
- Have a degree from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S. plus one year of experience in your chosen career field OR have five years of related work experience.
- Have a proficient level of English.

Step 2
Prepare and Submit Application
The application process allows us to assess program eligibility and ensure that all Department of State regulations are followed. J-1 candidates will submit documents to prove their eligibility. Host companies will create training plans that allow candidates to learn as much as possible in their chosen field while experiencing U.S. culture.

Application Review
We take great care in reviewing applications while maintaining one of the fastest turnaround times in the industry. Step 4
DS-2019 Issuance and Visa Appointment
Take your Alliance Abroad-issued DS-2019 form and your Training/Internship Placement Plan to the U.S. Embassy at your scheduled time for your J-1 visa appointment. It’s an important step, and we’re here to help if you need it!
Step 5
Start planning your arrival in the U.S.
Once your visa is approved, it’s time to book your flight and start planning your arrival. Our pre-departure orientation will tell you everything you need to know so that you are fully prepared for an unforgettable experience.
FAQ
Our standard review time for a completed application is seven business days, but we have two expedited options that would speed that up. Expedited service brings it to 3 business days, and Priority guarantees a review of a completed application in 1 business day.
Alliance Abroad Group is designated to sponsor programs for the following occupational categories:

Yes, this could be possible as long as the participant is eligible to participate in the program as an intern or a trainee and they will be learning new skills or learning about the U.S. market while they are here. They must also have a dedicated supervisor that has the knowledge and expertise to train them.
Yes, this is possible. The Department of State allows for participants to take on hybrid positions as long as they are onsite 60% of the time. The host company must also provide a full-time (minimum 32 hours per week) training experience.
While this list is not comprehensive, some of the most often asked about roles that are prohibited on the program are:
- Any position involving childcare or elder care, or in any kind of position that involves patient care or contact.
- Unskilled or casual labor positions
- Any position that requires more than 20% clerical or office support work.
- Use of the program for ordinary employment or work purposes is prohibited.
- The position cannot duplicate a trainee’s prior work experience or training
The Department of State recommends a 5:1 ratio between full time employees and J-1 Exchange Visitors. However, depending on the program offered, exceptions can be made. Please reach out to AAG to discuss your specific situation.
