Eligibility – Internships 

  • Be a full-time student or within 12 months of graduation from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S. 
  • Have a proficient level of English.
  • Accept a placement that supports your chosen career field based on your education or degree. 

Eligibility – Trainee Program  

  • Have a degree from an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S. plus one year of experience in your chosen career field OR have five years of related work experience. 
  • Have a proficient level of English.
  • Accept a placement that supports your chosen career field based on your education and work experience.

Step 1

Step 2

Prepare and Submit Application

The application process allows us to assess program eligibility and ensure that all Department of State regulations are followed.  J-1 candidates will submit documents to prove their eligibility. Host companies will create training plans that allow candidates to learn as much as possible in their chosen field while experiencing U.S. culture.

Step 3

Application Review

We take great care in reviewing applications while maintaining one of the fastest turnaround times in the industry. Step 4

DS-2019 Issuance and Visa Appointment

Take your Alliance Abroad-issued DS-2019 form and your Training/Internship Placement Plan to the U.S. Embassy at your scheduled time for your J-1 visa appointment. It’s an important step, and we’re here to help if you need it! 

Step 5

Start planning your arrival in the U.S.

Once your visa is approved, it’s time to book your flight and start planning your arrival. Our pre-departure orientation will tell you everything you need to know so that you are fully prepared for an unforgettable experience.

Our standard review time for a completed application is seven business days, but we have two expedited options that would speed that up. Expedited service brings it to 3 business days, and Priority guarantees a review of a completed application in 1 business day.
