Support and Guidance with Alliance Abroad

Starting an international work and travel program is always exciting and possibly a little overwhelming. Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone can be daunting, but it can also bring enormous benefits. These experiences are about learning, connecting with different cultures, and growing personally and professionally.

As our participants often say, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—don’t hesitate!”

At Alliance Abroad, we are here to support you every step of the way—before, during, and after your program. Ensuring your comfort, safety, and the quality of your experience are our top priorities.

Before You Go

 Step 1: Submit Your Application

Once we review your application and confirm you’re eligible, we’ll contact you to go over the details of your position—your host employer, salary, housing, job responsibilities, and everything else you need to know.  We want to ensure that the position is a great fit for your skills, experience and your goals.

Step 2: Get Ready for the Employer Interview

We’ll guide you through what to expect during your interview, which could be online or in-person, depending on the program.

You’ll usually meet the people you’ll be working with, like the Camp Director for the Summer Camp Program or the HR Manager and Executive Chef if you’re in the culinary Intern & Trainee program.  We will talk you through what questions they may ask, so you can think about your answers, which is particularly important if you will be doing the interview in your second language.

Step 3: Prepare Your Visa Documentation

If you are offered the position – congratulations!  We’ll advise you on the correct paperwork you’ll need for your visa appointment at the US Embassy and ensure you’re prepared for the embassy interview. You’ll need to fill out forms and show documents that highlight your personal and professional development.

With over 15,000 participants placed each year, we’ve done this many, many times and have got the experience to guide you!

Step 4: Attend the Pre-Departure Orientation

Almost time to go! We’ll provide a pre-departure orientation to guide you through what’s next, such as arrival details, SEVIS check-ins, and what to expect during your first few weeks abroad. This orientation can be in person or online.

Here’s some advice from Ashley Fuzaylova from our Participant Experience Support team:

“I suggest researching the area you’ll be in during the program. Look up the weather, local attractions, and things to do. Also, read the job description carefully before your interview.”

During the Program

While on your program, you’ll have access to:

  • Medical insurance coverage
  • 24/7 support line
  • Cultural exchange events
  • Contact with your Alliance Abroad Representative

Adjusting to a new country, city, language, food, and environment can feel overwhelming, but it’s also a great opportunity for personal growth and independence. Remember to be patient with yourself. As Ashley from our support team says:

“Be ready for culture shock! Feeling lonely or overwhelmed at first is normal. Give yourself time to adjust.”

While you are in the US, our team on the ground arranges regular cultural exchange events, like sports games, movie nights, or outings in the cities where you’re based. You’ll have lots of opportunities to hang out with other international program participants, and learn about their cultures too. Employers often organize team-building activities too, helping you settle in with and get to know your coworkers better.

You’ll also have monthly check-ins with our Support Team, so we know how things are going for you and can assist you with any issues or questions that you have.

 After the Program

Once your program ends, make sure to:

  • Check your paperwork
  • Complete your final SEVIS check-in
  • Comply with your visa terms on return dates
  • File your income tax return (if applicable)

If you did a program in the U.S., filing your tax return is part of wrapping up your experience. It’s definitely worth doing as you may even qualify for a tax refund!

While we don’t provide tax advice directly, we recommend using Sprintax to assist you with this process – it’s quick and easy to do online.
